Solitary Justice Project
The Solitary Justice Project (SJP) works to bring awareness to and end the use of solitary confinement in Michigan prisons, jails, and juvenile detention facilities.
The Solitary Justice Project creates a community centered in healing where survivors of solitary confinement and their loved ones find mutual support, develop advocacy skills, and transform trauma into collective power for policy change and self-empowerment. Participants benefit from trauma-informed peer support that addresses the unique psychological impacts of prolonged isolation while building leadership capacity to drive systemic reform.
The project serves both individuals who have directly experienced solitary confinement and family members impacted by their loved ones' isolation, recognizing that healing and empowerment must happen at both individual and community levels to create lasting change.
THE LAUNCH OF SJP
The Solitary Justice Project works to end solitary confinement in Michigan through survivor leadership, public education, healing, and policy change.
The work of the SJPwork combines trauma-informed support for survivors with public education and advocacy to reduce and ultimately end the use of solitary confinement in Michigan. Working alongside Citizens for Prison Reform and other partners, the project also supports legislative efforts and promotes more humane, rehabilitative approaches to corrections that prioritize healing, mental health, and successful reentry.
